New construction water heater installation is putting in a water heating system for a home that's being built from the ground up, which gives more flexibility than a retrofit since gas lines, venting, and electrical can all be planned and routed specifically for the unit you're installing rather than working around existing infrastructure. This is where getting the sizing and system type right from the start really pays off.
This applies to any new home build, addition with its own water heating needs, or new construction project where the water heating system hasn't been decided yet. Builders and homeowners at this stage have the advantage of choosing between tank and tankless, gas and electric, without the constraints of adapting to what's already in the walls, which means the decision should be based on household needs and long-term costs rather than what's easiest to retrofit.
We start early in the build process, working with the sizing needs of the finished home – number of bathrooms, expected household size, and simultaneous hot water demand – to recommend the right system type and capacity. For gas installations, we plan gas line sizing and venting routes during the build phase, which is far more efficient than adding them after the fact. For electric or tankless electric, we coordinate with the electrical rough-in to make sure panel capacity and wiring are planned correctly from the start. Once the home reaches the appropriate construction stage, we install the unit, complete all connections, and test the full system before final inspection.
Cost depends on system type and capacity chosen, and generally comes in more efficiently than a retrofit since everything is planned and routed during construction rather than adapted afterward. Builds in Berkeley, CA benefit from early coordination between the water heater installation and the broader plumbing and electrical rough-in schedule.
